With a population of 1.5 million, San Antonio is the seventh largest city by population in the US. It is the second largest city by population in Texas. The city is located in South Central Texas and is the seat of Bexar County. The city has multiple Fortune 500 companies and five military complexes. The San Antonio Metropolitan area boasts an economy with a gross domestic product of over 90 billion dollars annually.
San Antonio is home to many tourist attractions. The Alamo Mission, more commonly known as the “Alamo” brings in visitors from all over the country. The River Walk, which lines the San Antonio River, is another famous attraction that is lined with shops and restaurants.
San Antonio is home to many sports teams including the UTSA Roadrunners, the San Antonio Spurs, the San Antonio Missions, the San Antonio Stars, the San Antonio Rampage, and San Antonio FC Soccer.
The University of Texas at San Antonio is San Antonio’s only NCAA Division I athletic team. The team is known as the UTSA Roadrunners. In 2011, the football team hired as its head coach former University of Miami coach Larry Coker. San Antonio hosts the NCAA football Alamo Bowl, as well as the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which are both played in the Alamodome. The Alamodome occasionally hosts the Texas Rangers, too.
If you like to golf, you will feel right at home. Not only does San Antonio have excellent weather for golf, but the city is also home to eight excellent golf courses: Brackenridge, Cedar Creek, Mission del Lago, Northern Hills, Olmos Basin, Riverside, San Pedro, and Willow Springs.
San Antonio is home to the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, UT at San Antonio, Texas A&M University–San Antonio, Trinity University, St. Mary’s University, and the Alamo Community College District.
The largest newspaper is the San Antonio Express-News. San Antonio also boasts an international airport, the San Antonio International Airport.
San Antonio hosts a yearly Comic Con which attracts thousands.
San Antonio has robust city services. The Fire Department is one of the largest in the nation and has over 1,800 members and 51 stations. The Fire Chief is Charles Hood. In 2015, the department responded to over 167,000 emergency incidents.
The Police Department is quote “large” and receives an operating budget of over $400,000,000 a year. The Police Chief is William McManus. The department responds to over a million calls a year.
San Antonio is a very fit city. San Antonio has over twenty CrossFit facilities.
San Antonio is home to a rich Hispanic Arts community. The Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center is the largest convention center in the state and features several art pieces and decor that reveal the city’s history and culture.
The mayor of San Antonio is Ivy R. Taylor. She was elected Mayor of San Antonio on June 13, 2015. She is the first African-American woman to serve as mayor of a city with more than one million people. She is only the second female mayor of San Antonio.
San Antonio’s senators are Ted Cruz and John Cornyn. Due to the size of the San Antonio Metropolitan area the representatives are Congressman Joaquín Castro, Congressman Lamar Smith, Congressman Will Hurd, Congressman Henry Cuellar, and Congressman Lloyd Doggett.
